Grant recipient Alex Schuler gives an update on his training and competition
I just want to start by saying thank you for all the support you have shown me leading into this event.
The track in China was unlike anything I had ever ridden before and was considerably hotter than I had expected. It was an amazing experience to race the fastest people in the world in my age group and see what’s in store for next year in Holland if I'm lucky enough to be selected!
My main goals were to ride a pb in the kilo and Flying 200 and also to race the match sprints smarter than I ever have. My 200 and match sprint goals were met (and I also broke the U19 NZ National record for the flying 200)! But unfortunately due to a mechanical issue at the start of my kilo I was unable to race to my fullest ability. However these things happen, and it’s not something I’m going to dwell on.
My next competitions are being held in Australia as a part of the Blackline Track League Series, a new racing event combining male and female teams in both sprint and endurance racing, so a fantastic opportunity to keep racing against strong teams from both NZ and across the Tasman.
I am very excited to keep racing and travelling as I progress further in the sport I love and thanks again for all your support.
Alex
